1994: The .RU domain begins

The Russian internet gained its own national domain.

The .RU domain was registered on 7 April 1994, with administration assigned to the Russian Institute for Public Networks.

It provided an infrastructure for recognisable website addresses. Behind the short suffix were a registry, registration rules and the Domain Name System.
