Connecting cameras, an archive and an operator’s workstation

Video recording and network control / 2007–2008 · system design and software development

The recorder captured camera signals, encoded video on a capture board and stored the result. A separate workstation gave the operator access to the device over Ethernet.

Cameras feed the recorder while an operator controls recording and playback over the network.

01

Challenge

A recorder has two concurrent jobs. Video arrives from the cameras for recording, while an operator may request playback or change a setting. The PCI-104 project brought these functions together in a compact Windows-based system.

02

Our contribution

In September 2007 I.V.A. undertook to deliver the hardware and software system. The work covered configuration design, embedded software, testing and a remote operator application. I.V.A. commissioned individual stages and accepted their deliverables.

03

Solution

The capture board encoded and decoded video. Application software accessed the board through an API library and a Windows driver. The driver used separate buffers for recording and playback. Embedded software managed these operations and the video archive, while the operator configured the device from a remote workstation.

04

Testing the link between software and hardware

The motion detection procedure began by selecting an area in the camera image. The tester then had to check for an alarm in the application and a signal on the external output. To test a digital output separately, the operator selected the board and switched the channel in the test program. An instrument across the corresponding contacts showed whether the command had reached the hardware.

05

Outcome

I.V.A. accepted the embedded programming stage in March 2008 and functional testing in May. Acceptance of the remote user software and operating documentation was recorded in June.
