01
Challenge
Ordering bespoke furniture means connecting the buyer’s idea of the finished item with what will be manufactured. The purpose of shkaff was to give people a tool for designing their own wardrobe and a way to move from that design to an order with a manufacturer.
02
Solution
The process began in a 3D editor in the browser. Users designed their own wardrobe and viewed the item as a three-dimensional representation. They could then order the manufacture of that wardrobe from I.V.A.’s production partner. The digital design thus became the basis of the order.
03
Outcome
I.V.A. created and launched shkaff.ru in 2004. The service let users design wardrobes themselves and order their manufacture. I.V.A. provided the software and the user’s design tool, while the company’s partner handled production.
04
Historical assessment
The significance of this 2004 project lies in using the browser as a working environment for designing a physical product. The 3D representation was part of a user process leading to a manufacturing order. In I.V.A.’s history, shkaff represents interactive applications that connect a digital design with a concrete production task.
